Pharmacology of Drugs Used for Sedation ERCP

|
Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is an invasive procedure which takes a long time and causes substantial discomfort to patients. Therefore, deeper levels of sedation may be considered for successful and safe performance. Usually, wanted levels of sedation can be achieved with the combination administration of various drugs. However, since emergent situations from unintended deep sedation might happen, endoscopists should have thorough knowledge of pharmacological properties of drugs used for sedation. A medical history with particular emphasis on medications should be checked before a procedure. Also, patients should be monitored carefully during a procedure. An ERCP room should be equipped with prompt antagonists and devices for assisted ventilation.
